LG washing machines are among the most popular in Bethesda homes — and for good reason. The InverterDirect Drive motor, ThinQ smart diagnostics, and long-term reliability make them a good investment. But like any modern appliance with sophisticated electronics, LG washers communicate problems through a system of error codes that appear on the digital display when something goes wrong.

These codes are not random. Each one points to a specific system or component. Understanding what a code means — and knowing which ones you can address yourself versus which require a technician — saves time, money, and the frustration of guessing.

LG Error Code System Overview

LG washers use a two-letter code system displayed on the control panel. Most LG errors include a small sensor icon alongside the code. When an error appears, the machine stops the cycle and waits for the issue to be resolved before proceeding. Many LG errors can be cleared by pressing the Power button, fixing the underlying issue, and restarting the cycle. Some, however, require component replacement before the machine will operate.

LG also offers a SmartDiagnosis feature on ThinQ models that transmits error data to the LG SmartDiagnosis line or to the LG ThinQ app for remote diagnosis. This can help narrow down whether an issue requires service or can be resolved at home.

OE Error — Washer Not Draining

The OE error is LG's outlet error — the machine cannot complete its drain cycle within the allotted time. This is the most common LG washer error code we see in Bethesda, MD service calls.

Before calling for service, check these things in order:

  1. Clean the drain pump filter — located behind a small access panel at the lower front of the machine. This filter catches lint, coins, and debris. A clogged filter is the most common OE cause and is a DIY fix.
  2. Check the drain hose — confirm it is not kinked, crushed, or inserted too far into the standpipe (which can cause a siphoning effect).
  3. Check your household drain standpipe — if it is blocked, the problem is not the washer at all.

If all three check out and OE still appears, the drain pump motor has failed and needs replacement — this requires a technician.

UE Error — Unbalanced Load

The UE error (Unbalanced Error) appears when the LG washer detects the drum load is too uneven to proceed safely with the spin cycle. The machine will try to redistribute the load by tumbling slowly — if this does not resolve the balance, it displays UE and pauses.

Open the door, redistribute the laundry evenly, and restart the spin cycle. If UE appears consistently with balanced loads, the issue shifts from a load problem to a machine problem — specifically worn shock absorbers or suspension rods that are no longer properly dampening drum movement. This requires replacement.

Persistent UE errors on older LG front-load washers (particularly models over 7 years old) often indicate shock absorber wear — a repair that runs $180 to $280 and restores normal spin operation.

IE Error — Washer Not Filling

The IE error (Inlet Error) means the washer is not filling with water within the expected time. Work through this checklist before calling:

  1. Confirm both water supply valves (hot and cold) behind the washer are fully open
  2. Check for kinked inlet hoses
  3. Clean the inlet hose filters — small mesh screens inside the hose connections at the back of the machine can clog with sediment
  4. Confirm water pressure is adequate — LG washers require a minimum of 14.5 psi

If these checks do not resolve IE, the water inlet valve has failed. The valve is the electrically operated component that opens to allow water in — when it fails, the machine cannot fill regardless of supply pressure. Valve replacement runs $100 to $190 and is typically completed on the first service visit.

LE Error — Motor Problem

The LE error (Load Error or Motor Locked Error) indicates the drum motor has detected an overload or has become locked. This commonly occurs when:

  • The machine has been significantly overloaded — reduce the load, clear the LE error by pressing Start/Pause, and try again
  • A foreign object is jammed in the drum and preventing it from rotating freely
  • The motor's hall sensor (the component that monitors motor speed) has failed
  • The motor itself has failed — less common but possible on older units

If LE appears with normal loads and no foreign objects are present, this requires professional diagnosis. The hall sensor is a relatively affordable component; motor replacement is more significant.

LE vs tE — Don't Confuse These

The LE (motor locked) error is sometimes confused with tE (thermistor error), which relates to temperature sensing in the drum. Both stop the cycle, but they have completely different causes and solutions. tE typically means a temperature sensor has failed — LE means the motor is struggling. The case of the letter matters on LG displays.

DE Error — Door Issue

The DE error means the door latch cannot be confirmed as locked. LG washers will not operate with an unconfirmed door lock for safety reasons. Try opening the door fully, confirming nothing is caught in the latch mechanism, and closing it firmly. If DE persists, the door latch assembly has failed and needs replacement — a straightforward repair that runs $90 to $180.

FE Error — Overfilling

The FE error (Fill Error) means the machine has detected water above the expected fill level. This is typically caused by a faulty water inlet valve that is not fully closing, allowing water to slowly seep in even when the valve should be closed. The machine detects the rising water level via the pressure sensor and displays FE to prevent overflow.

An FE error requires prompt attention — a constantly seeping inlet valve can overflow the tub if the machine is left unattended. Turn off the water supply valves behind the washer until service can be scheduled.

When to Call vs DIY

IEYes — firstCheck valves, clean hose filters
DEPartiallyRe-close door firmly; if persists, call
LENoCall — motor/sensor diagnosis needed
FENoTurn off water valves and call
